Want to find out more about getting on scholarship in the US

The US has literally tens of thousands of athletes on Volleyball scholarships, offering full education and high quality volleyball. The US Olympic team selects athletes directly from college programs into their national team.

Over 1800 programs exist in the USA where scholarships are offered!

Currently Australia has over 15 girls on full academic scholarships and quite a few boys as well.

So what is on offer?

The following information is a guide as to what could be on offer

  • Accommodation
  • Meals
  • Books
  • Tuition and fees
  • All training equipment
  • All coaching
  • Travel expenses when competing including travel, accommodation and meals
  • All uniforms and training gear including shoes etc.

When should I start to look for a College?

As early as possible is the answer. Certainly girls and boys in year 10 and 11 shoud start looking. It's not too late if you are in Year 12, however time is of the essence.

Volleyschool has great links to US agents, who on your behalf, help you build your volleyvball and Academic resume and get all the information to you to help you make the right choice.

Plus the agent will have contact with over 500 colleges, so you can relax while the agent does the work.

So, if you are considering a US scholarship here's a link to the NCAA, downlaod info there and then come back to us to get in contact with an agent

What will the coaches over there want?

They'll want what all good coaches want.

A competitive attitude

Great base of skills -so they will want to see you play a full game on video (one that has not been edited to cut out the bad shots)

A dynamic athlete - so if you are a female and have a jump of over 55cm and can reach 2.90 metres or above or a male with a 70 cm jump who can reach over 3.15 metres, plus have mastered all the skills - then you would be in the running.

Good Academic background although this depends on each College. Some are easier to get into, others more difficult.

Someone who does not have to be 'looked after' an athlete who can take care of themselves and does not need constant 'mothering'

Generally speaking, girls and boys who have played for their state or above level would have the basic standards.

How much do I play?

Most programs have a competitive schedule of between 35 and 75 matches and training is usually 5 sessions per week.

What else should I consider?

Make sure you research programs and especially coaches. There are more bad ones than good ones, just like you have probably experienced already.

Do I want to go to the most well known schools like Stanford, UCLA or Pepperdine?

If so, everyone in the US also has the same thought, so expand your thoughts and consider lesser known colleges. Just because they are lesser known does not mean lesser standard.

What qualification do I want and is the degree in the USA equivalent in Australia?

Can I cope with staying in the USA and in the holidays can my folks afford to fly me back home?

So, summing up, there are many untapped opportunities for Aussies.

What are my chances of getting a scholarship.
